Better than Yesterday Series: Entry Level Classes
Written by Eric Lowery, Creative Director, Midtown Athletic Clubs
2021 is here, and if there’s one thing we can all agree on it’s that we’re ready to make this year better than the last. Along with that desire will be the overwhelming temptation to set lofty self-improvement goals for the next 12 months, as one so often does in January. But there’s an inherent problem with New Year’s resolutions: they set us up for failure by promoting the idea of complete behavioral change in one fell swoop. Because of this flawed philosophy, 45 percent of people give up on their resolutions by the end of January.
So what’s the alternative? This year, start each morning with the promise that you’ll try to be just a little bit better than yesterday. If you let your fitness slip in 2020 and getting back into a routine feels daunting, you’re not alone. Midtown is here to help you with a variety of entry-level programming. Commit yourself to try out just one of the below classes this week, see for yourself how much better you feel, then let that momentum carry you forward into the rest of the year.
Move Better
This new, virtual-only program is an excellent place to start when getting back into a routine. It incorporates mobilizations for added flexibility, as well as balance and functional movement training. It’s low impact, short (only 30 minutes), and is the perfect way to break up the monotony of working from home.
Vibe
Because this cycle class is a rhythm ride, it is extremely adaptable to all fitness levels, and perfect for those who are new to spin workouts. Your goal here is to match your movements to the rhythm of carefully curated playlists and dial up the resistance to match your comfort level. There are no metrics here, so let the music take you away and your workout will be done before you know it.
ReGen
Whether you’re sore from your first time back to the club, or simply looking to alleviate stiffness from poor posture, this is the program for you. It incorporates dynamic stretching and targeted trigger point myofascial release, which is a fancy way of saying: it might hurt during class, but you will feel relief immediately afterward.
